Xiaomi Unveiled Mi 5s & Its Upgraded Variant, Mi 5s Plus

Xiaomi announced two new flagship smartphones. The Mi 5s and Mi 5s Plus are updates to the Mi 5 / Mi 5 Pro and Mi 5 Plus phones that were announced in February at MWC 2016, and pack some new hardware inside a new brushed-aluminum chassis. Both phones boast hardware at par with more expensive rivals.

Now for those who use their smartphones for net browsing a lot, they’ll be happy to know that Xiaomi Mi 5s and Plus can connect from 2G signals up to 4G LTE connections. These are no slouch either because both of the phones have Qualcomm X12 integrated LTE.

As primary features escalate for Xiaomi Mi 5s and Plus, it is time to focus a bit on benchmarking figures they yield. Both are also a step higher than predecessor Mi 5 Pro that hit the market earlier this year. Under the hood of these two are the Snapdragon 821 at 2.15GHz speed for Mi 5s while Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus pegs at 2.34GHz.

Xiaomi Mi 5s has a very capable 5.15-inch with 1080p HD display along with pressure sensitive 3D touch similar to iPhones. In comparison, Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus doesn’t have 3D touch although its display is a bit wider at 5.7-inch with 1080p HD.

The other big change is a completely new chassis made entirely from brushed aluminum. The back edges are also curved, but there is no longer any glass or ceramic on the back like the Mi 5 and Mi 5 Pro, respectively. The change to the aluminum means the Mi 5s now includes plastic antenna lines on the top and bottom of the back panel. The new Mi 5s Plus goes a different route by using plastic inserts at the top and bottom that try to blend in by mimicking the texture and color of the surrounding aluminum.

For those who reside in China, you’ll be able to pre-order on Sept 29th, with the base model (64 gigabyte storage with 3 gigabyte of RAM) asking for the usual 1,999 yuan (about $300) and high-end version (128 gigabyte storage with 4 gigabyte of RAM) going for 2,299 yuan (about $345). It will come in four colors: Dark grey or gold if you want the brushed metal finish (like on the cheaper Redmi Pro), and pink or silver with the matte finish.
